The book I have chosen is “Dude. You’re a Fag: Masculinity and Sexuality in High School”, by C.J. Pascoe. There are various reasons why I have chosen this sociological book over the other options that were given. The various reasons are: since my perspective has always been a female one to view this from a male perspective, meaning of fag, I grew up in a small town and went to high school in a small town so seeing the difference between a traditional small town high school to a larger city one, and also to answer a few questions. The article starts off with an quote that describes what it is going into, “The relationship between adolescent masculinity and sexuality is embedded in the specter of the ‘faggot.’ “(C.J. Pascoe). The article then expands on and challenges the relationship between masculinity and homophobia. Such as being called a “fag” is a direct insult to a male’s masculinity, and this form of gender harassment significantly differs from males to females. Also, being called a “fag” can be meant as a joke, and the person saying this to a person does not always intend to be homophobic. Mostly, when you are on the receiving end of being called or even labelled a “fag” it does hurt. When someone says the term as an insult they mean it. It means you are feminine, not masculine, questions your sexual identity, down plays your strength, and reveals your weaknesses. Being a called a “fag” is also racialized: it is usually directed towards caucasian males and not males of other backgrounds, especially African-Americans.
