The purpose of this laboratory experiment was to identify the molarities of dye present in green Powerade and then create a solution that possessed the same concentrations. This experiment consisted of two parts of experimentation, the first part focused on identifying the dyes present and at what concentration, and the second part focused on the recreation of the stock solution. To successfully complete this experiment, a small cuvette, full of 2 mL of green Powerade, was placed into a UV spectrometer in order to identify which wavelengths were being absorbed and reflected. With this information a complete series of dilutions using yellow #5 and blue #1 dye in ratios of 1:1, 1:2, 1:3, 1:4, and 1:5 were conducted to find the max peak absorbancy …show more content…
It is used to enhance colors that are already present or make an item more appealing, appetizing, and attractive.1 Color additives serve as a way for people to distinguish items and create a system of identification. It is important that companies have the ability to produce food items that are the same in order to not interrupt with the system of identification that has been set in …show more content…
A spectrometer is a specialized instrument that is used to quantify and measure the reflectance and transmittance properties of a sample material.2 Every food dye used in the food industry is approved by the FDA and must follow a set of individual regulations.1 These regulations make each food dye identifiable through specific characteristics that a spectrometer has the ability to detect. The machine works by exposing a sample to a polychromatic light source.2 Whichever light is reflected will then be broken apart into various sections, within the visible spectrum that runs from red to violet. A spectra is then produced that contains quantifiable measurements of the sample.2 The spectrum includes wavelengths and infers that whichever light is being absorbed is the opposite of what is being reflected.3 For instance if blue light is being absorbed than the reflected light will be orange and if red light is being absorbed than blue light will be
