The word “dystopia” comes from the greek word “dys”, meaning bad, and “topos”, meaning “place”. This is a society where the government constantly watches you, where you have no individual choice, and all disobeyed can be punishable by your worst fears. Dystopian stories have influenced humans for quite some years now, on what our world could become. Social commentary plays a major role in the stories, this is where the reader is able to have their own opinion on a certain subject, this along with unique writing, gives the stories individuality. Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, George Orwell’s 1984, and Suzanne Collins The Hunger Games, are all examples of dystopian societies, where characters fight to be different, or fight to change the society
