Through my time taking ENGL 393, I have learned new skills and expanded my knowledge in writing. Looking back at the of the first assignment, the definition assignment, and my progress from that to now has seen tremendous improvement. Starting the course, I thought I was going to struggle due to my poor writing skills but, the structure of the class helped me improve these skills. The class was structured in a way to allow progress through improvement of certain skill which made it possible to improve my writing.
One of the valuable skills I learned is writing to a specific audience. The definition and instruction assignments have greatly benefitted me in sharpening this skill. Editing might sound insignificant but, it’s essential to my future. Initially when I started the class I was dreading long assignment like the project proposal. In the past, writing large papers I tended to give up on the editing portion of the paper. I never thought that editing was also part of the writing process. In addition, I have met people with magnificent writing skills and their first draft might look like my final. This used to demotivate me and make me on papers, and hope that there were no mistakes. But, through this class, specifically the group work, I have learned to embrace my weakness and seek to improve it. Now I know that I might not have the skills of some writers but, hope to fill the skill difference with hard work. This hard work starts with editing, my first draft might not be below average but, with hard work I would be able to make the final above average.
