“Kids at Hope” has become a part of the Herndon High School’s framework for all students and the entire staff. Kids at Hope is “a strategic, cultural framework designed to engage entire communities to support success for all children, no exceptions”. It is a cultural framework with strategies based on three leading principles and practices: We Believe, We Connect and We Time Travel. The “We Connect” component of Kids at Hope supports the notion that as long as children have meaningful and sustainable relationship with caring adults they will be successful. In 1897 May 12th, Earle Nelson was born and he was an American serial killer. Nelson's childhood was a difficult one. His mother and father both died of syphilis before Nelson turned two. He was then raised by his grandmother who was very religious. When Earle reached 10 years old he got hit by a trolley car while riding his bike, he was unconscious for six days and when he woke up his behavior became unpredictable.
In Steve Olson’s article, “The End of Race: Hawaii and the Mixing of Peoples,” he mainly talks about how the mixing of race can eventually lead to the pure races being meaningless due to there being a lot of mixed race and eventually rarely having a pure race. Olson talks about “Hapa haoles” in the beginning of his article, which means half European, half non-European. The first Hapa Haoles were born on the island of Maui in the end of 1779. This was the beginning of the mixed race. The European’s, which were considered dirty, “reduced the native population [of Polynesians] to fewer than 50,000,” in Hawaii at the year 1891, because of the diseases they brought(Olson, 301).
John Smith’s Adventurous Life John Smith was born in Willoughby, United Kingdom sometime during the month of January in 1580. He was born to two farmers: George and Alice Smith. Shortly after his birth, John was baptized in Saint Helena’s Church in Willoughby, England. Ever since John was born he was always seeking adventure. When John Smith was about thirteen years old, he ran away because he did not want to become a farmer.
If a school consists of only one type of race or ethnic group, then the students are isolated to the ideals of that specific community. But if diversity exists, the opportunity arises to learn about different cultures and become more well-rounded. This is illustrated by Owen and his best friend Dave, who is white. Even though Owen and Dave are two different races, they do not let that prevent them from being friends. They use their differences as an advantage to learn from each other and to help each other out.
At Harmony School of Discovery we have a very tight knit group of students. When Discovery first opened as a new school it opened it’s doors to kids from everywhere and from every which background. Us students were forced to come together and start fresh with virtual strangers, leaving behind everything familiar. This reality forced us to build new bonds with people going through the same hurdles as us, adjusting to a new school and a disparate environment. We learned how to nurture and preserve close relationships among our classmates, relationships between teachers and students, and relationships between students and administration.
The Berkeley Union School (BUS) seeks to provide accelerated learning programs for children planning to obtain their first college degree before the average age that other children graduate from high school. Mike Head, my freshman World History teacher, was the human embodiment of kindness. Consistently clad in his argyle sweater vests, polo shirts, and bright blue New Balance running shoes, Coach Head would roam the halls of George Walton, his shiny bald head like a beacon in a sea of students. Every day, Coach Head would make a point to greet and converse with students and faculty, brightening their days. Coach Head challenged the conventional history classroom; often encouraging the class to stand on top of the desks to “see things from a different angle.” In the second quarter of the school year, he brought a coffee maker into the classroom.
I believe that all children are individuals, unique in their abilities, from a wide diversity of backgrounds and cultures, and they also have the right to be treated with dignity and respect. Educators are observers and designers who have to observe children’s abilities, interests and learning styles for designing a curriculum that fulfill everyone’s needs. Observers also play an important role on noticing individual differences and offering help to children who have lower ability to improve
The diversity of student backgrounds, abilities and learning styles makes each person unique in the way he or she reacts to information. The intersection of diverse student backgrounds and active learning needs a comfortable, positive environment in which to take root. Dr. King continues by explaining, “Education which stops with efficiency may prove the greatest menace to society. The most dangerous criminal may be the man gifted with reason, but with no morals.” From back then to today’s society, kids are failing because they lack those morals that they need to succeed.
The point of this article is basically being there for them, teach them how to be independence, have someone to be in their life that we care about them. When the kids have trouble of reading, spelling, studying, we tutorial them and give them practice skills to work on their weakness to work on. We teach them how to control their emotions. When you have a friendly relationship is to always let them know that you care about them and show them develop trust to them, have that special bond with them. It is important to teach students about the classroom rules, schools rules, daily routines, learn to practice new skills in the classroom and out of the classroom, and now their school schedule and outside of school schedule.
