Over the past 20 years, the workforce identity of the early years setting has changed dramatically. Policy and governmental changes have inspired children led improvements and this has affected the identity of the Early Years Teacher. In 1997 the Labour Government outlined their commitment to improving quality within the early years setting and one of the main areas they concentrated on was the quality of staff within the settings. This resulted in the view that 'quality' was qualified. In 2007, Labour introduced the graduate role of the Early Years Practitioner, which aimed to raise the falling standards within the early year’s settings.
We create a positive and secure environment, working to ensure all children feel safe, appreciated and important. We do this by being inclusive, treating each child as an individual and promoting mutual respect. One of the most natural factors of being an Early Years Practitioner is nurturing the children in our care, this is salient in creating healthy attachments in children. Routines will support the physical care needs of children. It should provide a predictable and well-ordered environment, children know what to expect. They are comforting and provide regularity, especially for babies as they enable them to adjust to their own body rhythms.
The Children’s Home of Reading-Acute Partial Hospitalization Program helped shape my perspective of professionalism thru constant reestablishments of what to expect when in an alternative hospitalization or residential treatment program. I was able to learn that the children who attend these types of facilities required much more attention. They also, require the redirection of skills that have never been taught to them before. At my internship site, an issue that is related to professionalism is that sometimes some staff members will have the intern complete miscellaneous task that has nothing to do with what they are primarily there for. In the contemporary times, great importance is given to the significance of early years of a child’s life. It is widely acknowledged now-a-days that the early childhood years are a predominantly receptive phase in the developmental process. This stage is responsible to lay a foundation in early days and later years for cognitive functioning, learning process, physical wellbeing, and self-regulatory capacities in both personal and social lives. In simple words, “the period from birth to age 5 is one of opportunity and vulnerability for healthy physical, emotional, social, and cognitive development” (Karoly, Kilburn & Cannon, 2005). However, it is also a fact that many children go through several stressors during their developmental years due to which their healthy development may be impaired.
Early childhood professionals are from diverse professional backgrounds. They use multidisciplinary approaches to provide better support to families and draw on the skills and expertise of their peers.
The important reason to makes a good and professional early childhood educator is to communicate with children and try to understand them. I did not have any working experience in kindergarten, but I have some experience of taking care of a child due to my mother is a babysitter. The child that my mother takes care is a boy and he’s autism. He is a child that sometimes like lives in his own world and sometimes he is also hyperactive. He likes to sing, dance and write.
Having the right knowledge, skills and experience in understanding how children or young people develop are very important tools for early years practitioners. We must put to mind that each child born into this world is unique. Children are born with different characters, their personalities and behaviours are formed and influenced by a variety of factors. These factors may affect their ways of interacting with the environment and community or setting in which they live in.
