The Different Operations of The CIA
During the early Cold War, the CIA conducted covert operations. Those operations were called TPAJAX, PBSUCCESS, and Mongoose. These operations took place to encourage American interests. These operations also have limits and capabilities of the CIA that can also be related to the arguments of Gaddis about the morality of American foreign policy. TPAJAX was an operation authorized by Eisenhower in March 1953, right after he took office in January of 1953. It was a CIA led coup d’etat taking place in Iran to overthrow the Prime Minister Mossadeq which eventually led to a broken relationship between the United States and Iran. PBSUCCESS was another operation that took place in 1954 to overthrow the government in Guatemala and install a military junta in June 1954. Finally, Operation Mongoose was an operation authorized by John F. Kennedy to assassinate Fidel Castro on November 30, 1961. They were able to successfully overthrow Arbenz, but their own fear for communism was shown as well as their motivation to allow no threat to the American economic interests. According to the CIA and Guatemala Assassination Proposals “ CIA and Intelligence community reports tended to support the views that Guatemala and the Arbenz regime were rapidly falling under the sway of the Communists”(Gerald K.
