The speaker started with a strong voice and with a question that have gotten our attention, and it was as follows: “Have you ever wondered how did the first settlers live their daily lives, and arranged for the chores?” He had a strong body language, eye contact, smiling when appropriate, gesturing. He used his arms and legs, and was moving around, and gave us the impression of an early settler (his clothing was very similar to that time period). After the brief question introduction he continued to describe the landscape, the houses, the local animals. The description of the location was very vivid. After the speech we approached the speaker, and expounded on the message. There was more to his thesis – he wanted to emphasize how the early life was hard, but in some aspects more rewarding than the lives we live today. The speaker did not include a preview, and that is why it was hard for us the clearly see the thesis until the very end. Once we heard the whole talk, I had to sort out the main points, and draw a conclusion. I believe he left this part to us on purpose. There are persons I have met in life that speak a lot, but say little. A person might be using a lot of words while speaking but conveying little information. It is very important to learn how to use words effectively in order to achieve your goal (whether it is to teach, to inform, to persuade, to critique or to comfort). There is no person on this Earth that has not regretted saying the wrong words at the wrong time in their lives. Speaking the right words to relate messages, meanings, emotions is an art that needs to be learned, and it is not easy no matter if we have the gift of speech or not. Some persons might be more talented than others for learning that instrument, but they still need the fine-tuning.
