Society has changed throughout the years and a major factor has been technological advances. Body image has always been in existence, but it is has been extensively impacted by the changes in society. In Ancient Greece, Aphrodite was the goddess of love and beauty, however, in her statues she is not shown as being thin. This shows that the idea of beauty has changed throughout the years. Beauty is honestly just a perception, and at one point the more that people weigh the more beautiful people thought that the person was. In today's world, we think that thinness is beautiful which is not a problem, but the real problem is that people believe that because people are not thin that means that they are not beautiful. “Interpersonal factors include troubled family and personal relationships, difficulty expressing emotions and feelings, a history of being teased or ridiculed based on size and weight, or a history of physical or sexual abuse” (Eating). Many people do not really understand the real meaning of bullying. Bullying is mistreatment of vulnerable people, it can be only verbal, bullying does not have to be physical. Harassment can come in many different forms such as: physical, sexual, and verbal. Harassment can be very serious and demeaning because it makes people feel like they are worthless and think negatively, as well as be in a negative mood. When people are bullied, teased, or harassed over time they tend to have a low self-esteem which is a factor in having an eating disorder. “Low self-esteem; feelings of inadequacy or lack of control in life; depression, anxiety, stress or loneliness” (Media). Many people will struggle with low self-esteem and poor body image before they develop an eating disorder. Self-esteem is extremely important because it can make you feel good about yourself, boost your confidence, and improve your attitude. Some psychological factors that can lead to eating disorders are: anxiety and depression. Anxiety and depression are both very serious psychological disorders that changes the way that people live their lives. Anxiety causes extreme worry and fear, everyone experiences anxiety, however, it is not the same as having an anxiety disorders. Anxiety that people feel every now and then is what people with an anxiety disorder feel anxious constantly. Depression is another serious disorder that can change the way that people think to make them in a negative mood and state of mind. People with depression tend to suffer from persistent feelings of worthlessness and sadness. “Other factors—psychological, interpersonal, and social—can play a role in eating disorders.
