A Christmas Carol “Greed is a bottomless pit which exhausts the person in an endless effort to satisfy the need without ever reaching satisfaction.” (Erich Fromm) Greed can affect a person to the point that they hate everyone and everything. When people get caught up in money, they forget what is really important. In A Christmas Carol, the movie and the play, there are many similarities and differences in the conflict, climax, and resolution of a greedy man that goes by the name of Ebenezer Scrooge. In the play A Christmas Carol, by Charles Dickens, Ebenezer Scrooge never had an extra thought for anyone or anything, for his thoughts were too occupied with himself and his wealth. The start of the movie is in Scrooge’s shop. Scrooge leaves and meets Mr.Cratchit’s crippled son, Tiny Tim outside. Scrooge is at home when his dead friend’s ghost visits Scrooge in chains and money boxes representing his greed. He warns Scrooge of the same fate if he doesn’t change his attitude. (Film 1984) He also warns Scrooge of three ghosts that will visit him throughout the night. He is first visited by the ghost of Christmas Past who showed him his past love life that was ruined by Scrooge’s greed. Then he is visited by Christmas Present who showed Scrooge Bob Cratchit’s cheerful home to have Christmas Future later on show him the death of young Tiny Tim. After seeing his grave by Christmas Future, Scrooge promises to never forget his experience and to live on the good side of life. (Film 1984) He awakens to Christmas morning and gives many thoughtful gifts to people in need. He kept his promise and lived as he said he would and lived on every Christmas afterward with a happy attitude. Although there are way less differences than similarities, there are still some. Some differences include the character of Christmas Past. In the play the character was a man, but in the movie it was played as a woman. Another is when Scrooge is shown the present life of his old lover and sees how happy she is. In the movie, Tiny Tim is recognized at the start instead of just in Christmas Present. There are definitely
