In my opinion what motivated the Crusades was economic reasons simply because money is power. Religion could have been a factor but the main reason why I choose the economic factor was because money tends to leave behind a bloody violence. People would do anything for money take the lords for example, they were wealthy enough money to hire private armies and build castles. After the battle with Vikings ended, the knights were left with nothing to do, they were only trained to kill and fight. The local lords would have built castles not to protect but to use the peasants for their own greedy needs.
