The role of adults play a crucial role in Christopher’s life, and his father is no exception. Ed Boone has been seen as a negative influence,, as he forces Christopher to be secretive, is very unstable, and uses crude language and physical force on his son, as well as lying about crucial parts of Christopher’s life. Christopher’s father often goes to extremes when demonstrating his emotions, occasionally blowing up in anger, and he lacks the confidence to work through his problems verbally. When trying to explain himself he stutters and stops and often has trouble connecting sentences. Like Christopher, he has very few friends—Rhodri is the only one the novel mentions. He causes Christopher to act secretively, as he does not explain what was wrong in the situation. This happened when Christopher was inquiring about Wellington- his father responds by telling him to ‘Not go around sticking your ******* nose in other people’s business’ (82), but not fully elaborating on how so. This leaves Christopher to try testing a gray area, especially since he is autistic and will take everything in a literal manner. They are more likely to rebel against corporal punishment than against other disciplinary techniques. They do not always think rationally like adults, but they do have an innate sense of fairness—though their standards are not the same as adults. Oftentimes, the sense of unfairness escalates to a feeling of humiliation. When punishment humiliates children they either rebel or withdraw. While hitting may appear to make the child afraid to repeat the misbehavior, it is more likely to make the child fear the offender. Swearing, on the other hand is a habitual thing, one that many children take from their parents. If Christopher’s father keeps this up, then his son will soon pick up on the vulgar
