Even though Edgar Allan Poe’s life was short, the impacts of his writings continue to live on in literature today. Being one of the first writers of his time to publish short stories, Poe blazed the path for future authors. Poe is also considered the pioneer of some of today’s most popular genres. He is credited with the creation of detective stories and locked-room stories, as well as further innovating the genre of science fiction (Poetry Foundation). During his lifetime, Edgar Allan Poe did not receive much praise or recognition for his writings. Though his writings were not popular while he was alive, enormous fame followed Poe’s death (LeVert 104-105). Most popular for his macabre short stories, Poe is remembered as one of the best gothic writers in history. Since Poe’s works were so different from most at the time, critics and readers found many of Poe’s early writings to be too obscure and confusing to be properly enjoyed. However, as Poe gained more writing experience, he was able to develop his writing style into something that people across the world would come to appreciate. Poe was meticulous about the wording and rhythm that his writings had. Whenever Poe was writing, he would think deeply about each line in his story (Poetry Foundation). Add something about symbolism/deeper meanings of everything. Poe wrote with the idea that technique and language were equally as important as the content of a story. Being a poet, Poe knew how to use the structure of his stories to create specific atmospheres for his readers to experience (Poetry Foundation). In addition, Poe would often use first-person narrators in order to give his stories a more immersive environment.
