Edgar Allan Poe was one of the most well known poets to ever live. He changed literature as we know it with his writing style and opened up a new era and genre of poetry as well. He is now praised for doing this, but never got anything from this writing while alive. He sold his best story for a couple of dollars just to survive, and support his family. His life didn’t go the way he wanted. He barely got through with whatever dead-end job he could get. However, his life did have meaning and make a difference. It shaped the way he wrote poetry, and without his incomparable poetry, literature would never be the same.

This means that he has wrote most of his life, he roughly wrote from 1824 through his death in 1849. By writing in his life it puts his writing into the Romanticism era. The Romanticism era was a awe-inspiring time that gave inspiration to many people. It was also worrisome to other people, because the era started as a revolt in 1750. It was a revolt that spread across Europe very fast. Even to other places like the United States and the United Kingdom. The Romanticism era was a time that allowed poets to write to their creative side because it was all about imagination, not only in literature, but in all other works including music and art.The Romanticism era was also supposed to be all for the people. The era was against uniformed roles in society already decided for an individual judged on their wealth and class. It was also against precis laws, and more for things like imagination over coherent thoughts. There were many important movements that helped to shape this era. During Edgar Allan Poe’s life, many important events happened. These events were not only in the United States where he lived, but also all over the world, most importantly in Great Britain. In the United States, Thomas Jefferson became President in 1809. The war of 1812 started while Poe was three years old. During this war Great Britain burned down Washington, D.C.. This happened in 1814 when Poe was five years old. However, a year before this Lord Byron started working on “The Giaour” which was a very influential piece for the era. Things in the United States slowed down after this trying to heal from the brutality of the war. Until 1825 when John Quincy Adams became President while Poe was 16. The next Presidential election that was held ended Andrew Jackson becoming President of the United States. In 1830 one of the greatest writers ever, Emily Dickinson, was born whilst Poe was 21. Then another marvelous writer, Mark Twain, was born on November 30, 1835. At this time, Poe was 26. Things started to slow down in United States’ history with only minor history happening.
