Stories that were written in an asylum. Depressing and dark. This was Edgar Allan Poe’s desk. Where he wrote malicious stories that question his sanity. Edgar Allen Poe's distorted mind led him to create some of the most marvelous pieces ever. He tied his themes to the real world by weaving unimaginable ideas together. The death of his mother, sisters, and loved ones caused these poems to not only have a theme in the real world theme yet a theme that Poe learned and experienced. In a sense, some of his characters represent Poe’s thoughts directly. Themes both revolving around time and death. Poe could easily write these poems coming from the real world where everyone is dying around him from diseases while Poe is becoming a madman. The Red Death. A story Poe concocted in 1842. The story weaves in death as the people inside the palace carelessly carry on with balls and masques. The theme is shown by the symbolism of the room and how the rooms led to death. Tell Tale Heart is yet another dark story that Poe has produced weaving a theme into a story about time and death. Similar to The Masque of the Red Death, time revolves around the killing of the man that gave him everything. Not surprisingly, Poe’s details about Tell Tale Heart relate to his life as Poe was becoming insane! Quotes such as these show this. “It’s True! Yes, I have been ill, very but why do you say that I have lost my mind, why do you say I am mad?” (Poe, 64) Or other quotes such as “Listen! Listen, and I will tell you how it happened.
