It is set in the 1920s, the jazz age, which is the time period where social and economic changes occured and allowed people to go away from old traditions and embrace new ideas (Alchin, Linda). The book is narrated by a man, Nick Carraway, who is seeking the american dream. He moves in next door to a millionaire, Jay Gatsby, who has a love affair with an already married women, Daisy Buchanan. Daisy Buchanan a beautiful woman that is married to a man named Tom, but has a love affair with a guy she previously loved, and has to decide who she actually loves.
The theme of The Great Gatsby written by F. Scott Fitzgerald is, the upper class is a very shady set of people who are dishonest and unfaithful. Characters like Nick, Gatsby, Tom and George have twisted views on their own reality due to unfaithfulness and dishonesty. The novel was never assigned or studied in any of my English classes and so, out of sheer curiosity because I knew it was considered a literary masterpiece, I decided to read it for my own pleasure. The only information I had about Gatsby was that it was set during the 1920s and that it was an American classic.
