“Yo nunca tuve la oportunidad de estudiar en México porque desde que estaba en la primaria me ponían a cuidar a los niños, a lavar, y cocinar porque todos los adultos se iban a la milpa a cosechar.” Patricia continued to emphasize the importance of obtaining an education, which is why she encourages her children to stay in school. Because of this, after many years of not being able to read and write, Patricia decided one day that it was time to change this. She shared that two years after she started working, she enrolled in adult education classes, where she not only learned how to read and write, but also took an English course. This was because the family was facing financial difficulties when it came to food and healthcare. Miss Coronado had just given birth to a baby girl and had three other children to take care of. Similar to the Coronado family, many other Latino families struggle with being able to pay for these two expenses. Although, government assistance was available for the family, this according to Patricia was not an option. However, this fear nearly affected the education of one of her eldest children, which is why Patricia is more at ease about asking for help, but to a certain extent. We learned that one of her older children was attempting to obtain financial aid to pay for school, but Miss Coronado was very skeptical about providing personal information. Although, Patricia has filed and paid taxes the last fifteen years she’s been in this country, her fear still lied in being tracked down and stripped of her belongings by the government. Unfortunately, this fear is also shared by many others within the community and is due to the lack of being informed and educated on certain services available to the Latino
