In the painting titled, “The Scream,” the artist Edvard Munch, uses colors, the structure of the bridge, and the horror reflected in the face to create an image of filled with drama. The bridge suggests that the individual might be fleeing from something on the other side of the bridge, or perhaps she is afraid of something she sees ahead of her. Also, the structure of the bridge is something that connects not only land, but also the past, present, and future. Where the subject is standing, it is dark as is the clothing. Although the painting does not have a lot objects in the picture, there are still several visual elements and principles of design. The visual elements that draw the eye are the colors, texture, and implied. The color red in the sky, which also happens to be the background suggests passion, blood, and drama. Not only is red the color of love, but also the color of violence and anger. The subjects clothing is dark as is the water under the bridge and suggests gloom and doom. Also, the open mouth and the hands to the face imply fear, and if you glance, closer at the painting, you notice two figures behind her. In the other versions, the two people on the bridge are easy to see, and even further in the painting, there are two boats. It was Munch’s intention for us to study his artwork and ponder if the fear was from what was behind the figure or in front. He wanted us to use our nightmares, and fears to fill in the blanks with our demons.
