Edward Estlin Cummings, an American author, created remarkable stories and was titled one of “America’s leading 20th century poets.” He has received worldwide renown for his unique typography and hidden meanings. (Frazee). In addition to being widely known for his style, E.E. Cummings found ways to twist the mind and have the poem “understand you” rather than one trying to read between the lines. He has a way to keep the reader engaged and has provided the reader with value and a sense of compassion (Everett). Lyrically and visually, Cummings has connected with various readers and has evoked a sense of exasperation. The poem splits with two distinct phrases: “loneliness” and “a leaf falls.” These two words put together puts a puzzling yet astonishing symbol to what Cummings is trying to convey. The falling of a leaf is physical and concrete, whereas, loneliness is emotional and abstract creating a wonderful connection internally and externally. The two words give a sense of isolation and ultimately a complex comparison to many readers. In addition to the only four words presented, there is a work of art being exhibited, as well, through the typography and how the word formation resembles a leaf falling possibly, isolating itself from the other leaves. In addition to the possible leaf falling formation, the reader sees a “1” as well underlying the theme of loneliness and isolation. The deliberate use of the numerical value one and the consistent alphabet character ‘a,’ the reader can truly see the feelings and possibly the lifestyle E. E.
