Effective Use Of Strong Verbs In Candace Fleming's Books

For my mentor author I chose Candace Fleming. She is an author of picture books and middle level in both fiction and nonfiction. She focuses a lot on history and uses many techniques but mainly strong verbs, conflicts and description. The first technique she uses in her books would be the use of strong verbs. In my opinion strong verbs are very important in books because it almost makes the action come alive. Especially for children they get excited when a strong verb comes up because it makes them curious as to what is going to happen. Verbs are important to begin with because it is the action of what the character is doing or may do. With strong verbs you really get the feeling of what the character is doing. I really enjoy how Candace uses them in her books because most of them are used in a string and brings the story more to life. Some examples from her books that I really enjoyed would be from the book Papa’s Mechanical Fish. In my opinion I think that conflicts are important to story lines because it will allow people to guess and think about what will happen next or how the character will overcome the problem in front of them. Conflicts in a story also keeps the book interesting. People will want to keep on reading until the character finds a solution. They want to see what end up happening. Once again most of her books have conflicts and solutions them but my favorite would be from Imogene’s Last Stand. This whole book follows along a little girl and a museum that she found. One day she finds a sign in her yard “” Torn down?” cried Imogene.” The rest of the book talks about how she saves the museum with all the different actions she tries. This would also show students to never give up on what you want. With the conflict the students would want to continue reading it until they found out what happened to the
