Childhood Obesity and Its Effects on Health 70% of American adults and 32% of American children were obese as of 2012 , since then these numbers are on the rise. The numbers of obesity in America, especially in American children, have been rising for decades. These increases have been partially due to growth in the industries like fast food, television and videogames which are causing americans to be less active all across the country. Obesity, especially in children is disastrous to a person’s mental and physical health, to fix this people of all ages need to be made aware of the importance of a healthy lifestyle. For instance go to Camp Jump Start a lot of kids that go to this weight loss and self esteem camp are from the Stl and Kcm areas, not to mention the multiple individuals from the Chicago area. Having obesity as a child leads to heart disease, type 2 diabetes (previously known as adult onset diabetes), asthma, and sleep apnea. Not to mention the multiple mental health issues including and not limited to social discrimination, depression, social anxiety, and paranoia. 2% of children under the age of 12 are clinically depressed, isn’t that crazy those little kids who are supposed to be having fun and living out the joys of childhood are being diagnosed with clinical depression. Now comparably 4% of teens are clinically depressed, now these numbers could be off because the symptoms of depression and the symptoms of obesity are almost identical so no one really knows how many cases have gone unknown because of the mindset of “there just acting that way because their fat” can make kids embarrassed or even scared too say anything.
