Family Complications There are many themes that are revealed throughout Hamlet. As a person living in today’s society, family issues are very common. Many families deal with divorce, adultery, and the many other things that go wrong in marriages. In Hamlet, the family issues within Hamlet’s family not only affect his family, but also affect the many people around him. This is true in today’s world as well. The impacts that family issues have on families can also lead to suicidal thoughts and/or suicide itself. The theme of family issues revealed in Hamlet is applicable in today’s society because divorces are very common; this issue is cause to many problems within the household such as suicidal thoughts and issues that spread beyond the family. Divorce is very common in many homes all around America today. A recent study shows that between 40 and 50 percent of married couples get divorced in the United States (“Marriage and Divorce”). This puts a huge strain on not only the parents, but the kids as well. Hamlet doesn’t know how to deal with the thought of his mom moving on so quickly. He cannot grasp the fact the he is the only one still dwelling on the death of his father. In the society of today’s world, suicidal thoughts following divorce are very common. A recent study discovered that men coming from a family of divorced parents are three times more likely to think about suicide than men who come from normal families. The study also concluded that women coming from divorced families have 83 percent more of a chance of thinking about suicide than women that don’t come from divorced families ("Higher Risk of Suicidal Thoughts for Children of Divorce").
