Eight years before the U.S. Embassy attack in 1998, U.S. military troops were brought to Saudi Arabia because of the invasion of Kuwait. The Al Qaeda leader, Osama Bin Laden, was offended by the U.S. sending troops to the home of the holy cities of Mecca and Medina. Al Qaeda, then started planning future attacks as early as 1993. The attack was led by Ali Mohamed, who also was a part of the 1993 World Trade Center attack. In 1994, Osama Bin Laden and other Al Qaeda members decided to attack the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi because it was an easy target. They had made plans to designate a car bomb the following months.
