I. Introduction
Many private family medicine practices have expanded their practice to using EHR. EHR is a digital displayed in a patient’s chart. EHRs make it possible for providers to have faster communication of patient’s medical records. The use of paper records is not necessary. There are pros and cons to EHR. However, I think the pros overweight the cons. There are more advantages than disadvantages of which EHR provides for private family medicine practice. EHR benefits patients, providers, and billing/insurance. Insurance companies can be very stressful to work with but with EHR every procedure that was done in the office can be documented instantly.

When using paper records it is difficult to understand what the doctor is saying by their handwriting. A lot of time people have been given the wrong medication because no one could understand the doctors hand writing. For example, at my job parents have to come into the office in order to get a script if it’s for any ADHD medication. At time, parents would have to come back because the pharmacist did not understand the handwriting or if the doctor forgot to sign the script, or even the date was wrong written. In that case providers would not be able to give their patients the best care. When EHR and HIE work together they can provide the patient with the appropriate care.
