The “perfect society” is within your reach. But to reach that society, all individual rights will be taken away. In the literary piece, Anthem, the author depicts the futuristic idea of a perfect society. Within this society, there were rules and controls. Why do you think these rules existed and how did they affect the lives with in the society? Would Equality’s vison on a perfect society have rules? In the novel, Anthem, the author creates a “perfect Society” that has rules and controls to dehumanize individuals to result in a “peaceful world.” Imagine not being able to talk about yourself as an individual, and talking in the sense of a whole society. “The word I has vanished from the human language, there are no singular pronouns, a man refers to himself as we and to another man as they.” (Gordon) Today, we live in a world where we rely on other people for things. Now since our society has changed to “perfect”, our names are gone and replaced with governmental words. “In Anthem's dystopian civilization, society has progressed to the point where the people have no choice in what they do and live under complete authoritarian rule.” (Colton) Rand is very good at allowing the reader to understand the lack of individualism. She gives many examples on how the futuristic lifestyle in the book affects the people characterized in there.
