In the story “Eleven”, Cisneros explains how a girl named Rachel turns eleven years old, yet she does not feel like she is eleven. Later on, she has a disagreement with her teacher and she wishes she was older so she could defend herself. Confidence may be gained as people mature, but it might not be as fast as it’s desired. The protagonist of the story is Rachel, she is the protagonist because the story is in her point of view and the conflicts in the story revolve around her. She mainly talks about herself and her surroundings, which lets me know that the story is in her point of view. Through indirect characterization, I learned that Rachel is a shy and timid girl. Rachel is also very insecure about herself and she doesn’t feel like she belongs in her classroom. Rachel is a round character because throughout the story she has all these emotions that she feels, she feels conflicted and she struggles to defend herself. Rachel is a static character because her view on turning a different age does not change, she still say that even though she turned eleven there will still be things that will make her feel like she’s older so she could better defend herself. Pierce. The story showed that the relationship between them two wasn’t the greatest, it wasn’t the best relationship but it wasn’t the worst. In the story, Rachel and her teacher Mrs. Pierce do have a conflict with each other. The conflict is that Mrs. Pierce made Rachel wear a sweater without asking Rachel if it was hers or not, therefore causing Rachel to feel bad and cry.
