Eli Yanakakis Character Description

Eli Yanakakis is just your average fifteen year old son of billionare Rex Yanakakis. Well, except for the fact that him and almost his entire family are currently surviving in a luxorious underground bunker while the outside world is supposedly in ruins from a nuclear attack. Eli, who is the narrator and main protagonist, is still coming to terms with the fact that his identical twin brother, Eddy, did not make it to the Compound- six years after the doors shut. To keep a part of his brother with him, Eli had not cut his hair since he was twelve (page 10). Eli is also a very stone cold and abrasive guy, taking out his frustrations on his younger sister, Terese. For the six years that him and his family have been in the Compound, he has not touched anyone- not even a hug for his own mother (page 24). Even though they are now in a closer proximity to eachother, Eli makes no effort to talk to his family and purposely avoids them at all costs. At one part of the story, he was having a conversation with his mom, and he said that that was the longest he'd talked to his mom in all of their time there (page 75). Personally, I'm very emotional, and I wear those emotions right on my sleeve, so I wouldn't be able to keep up an act of not caring about anything. Also, I think that Eli should make at least some effort to talk to his family. It doesn't even have to be with his whole family, because, honestly, I'm afraid of his dad, too. However, his mother seems to be an extremely caring, patient, and calm person, considering she hasn't snapped on anyone, yet, and actually put effort into Eli's birthday dinner (page 23-24). Hopefully, Eli learns to accept his emotions and not shut everyone out by the end of the
