Elie Wiesel Essay RD “The opposite of love is not hate, but indifference.” (Nobel) These are the words of the greatest hero known to mankind, Elie Wiesel. Elie was sentenced to death by his family during the Holocaust. Elie lived beyond this torture and found that God was with him because he had to show the world the love that was lost. There is love in this world and Elie Wiesel proved that when he published his first book, La Nuit or Night. Elie survived the genocide of Auschwitz, which is what made him become the hero he is today. What is a hero? A hero is someone of distinguished courage or ability, admired for their brave deeds and noble qualities. Thousands were killed in the days prior, then the guards killed anyone who would fall behind. Overall, more than 15,000 Jews died during this March (Death March). After arriving at the Buchenwald concentration camp, Elie’s father couldn’t keep up and passed away on January 28, 1945. This broke Elie but forced him to push through, doing what he could to survive. Elie was liberated in April 1945, in the Buchenwald camp, by Allied troops (Britannica). After the war was over, Elie found out that his two older sisters had both survived Auschwitz, so they all met up for a reunion and to grieve their lost loved ones (Britannica). These events are what caused Elie to become the man that he was, a hero. After surviving Auschwitz, Elie decided to start a new life, so he moved to the United States. He lived in New York and thrived in his new life. Elie Wiesel was a powerful man, not because of the strength of his bones, but because of the strength of his heart and mind.
