The Holocaust was a tragic genocide, killing over 6 million Jew’s during World War 2. Countless stories have been told of this horrifying event, but very few are from people who lived through it. Elie Wiesel is a survivor of the Holocaust who shared his story. From concentration camps to losing homes and loved ones, Elie dives deep into the physical and mental toll that his experience put him through. He has gained recognition from all over the world through sharing his experience. The memoir Night by Elie Wiesel is a devastating book about the power and control the Nazi’s had over Jewish prisoners shown through work and labor. The Nazi’s valued work and labor because not only did it physically drain the prisoners, but it helped strip them of their identity. They became so mentally exhausted that they had lost a sense of self. Memoirs such as Night help people who weren’t involved in these tragic, historical events understand how horrific they really were. These deaths are not to go unnoticed and need to be remembered in order to prevent something so horrible from ever happening again. These events destroy communities and push people further apart. Reading about the trauma that Elie lived through makes anyone feel sympathy towards the people who had to suffer through the same experience he did. “I had not seen myself since the ghetto. From the depths of the mirror, a corpse gazed back at me. The look in his eye, as they stared into mine, has never left me” (Wiesel 115). This version of Elie never left him. It puts into perspective how devastating the Holocaust was and allows an understanding of all the pain and suffering caused by any historic event.
