Elizabeth Korbert The Sixth Extinction Summary

Where will humans still have hope about preserving the environment? Elizabeth says,” To argue that the current extinction event could be averted if people just cared more and were willing to make more sacrifices is not wrong, exactly; still, it misses the point. It doesn’t much matter whether people care or don’t care. What matters is that people change the world”. In order, to create a safe environment for humans and other species we need eliminate the manmade pollution of the atmosphere. In the “Sixth Extinction” by Elizabeth Kolbert, she argues that the existence of humans has led to the loss or decrease of many animals and wildlife. From research and observations, I can attest that human continued lack of care for the environment and the …show more content…

The danger to the environment is caused by humans contaminating nature resources with their toxic waste. Wilson emphasized that humans need to take care of nature so there will be a sustainable environment for other generations to come. Humans need to identify themselves with other species in wildlife to acquire knowledge and understanding of environmental ethics and building a clean atmosphere on earth.
Nature is where we should call home not a place we destroy and manipulate the resources offered for our own gain. An article published in the Vice News forum by Esha Dey talks about the increase in extinction and how that will affect humans in the future. Biologist reported that there will be mass extinction in the future. It is shocking to know “life would take many millions of years to recover, and our species itself would likely disappear early on” (Dey, 2015). The extinction rates are at a record high because of the dangerous human activities which affects the …show more content…

The growing human population plays a great role in extinction today and hundreds of years ago. Colonization is followed by an “extinction pattern” that has drove species to go extinct. As the population increases, there was a need to “plow wildlife habitats, divert streams, and maintain large herds of domestic cattle” which force species to move away from their homes and become extinct (Center for Biological Diversity). I can understand how human colonization has displaced species and altered the survival success for these animals who were present 1000 years ago now extinct. Human population led to the drastic effects on the environment resources which cause many species and plants to go extinct. Similarly, Jeffrey Mckee, one of the study’s authors argues the “The density of people is a key factor in species threats,’ “we are facing a serious threat to global biodiversity associated with our growing human population” (Center for Biological Diversity quoted Mckee). Extinction is visible today because humans are taking place in sustainability and knowing how to balance there eco footprint due to growing population. There is a threat to biodiversity because humans don’t realize the threats that their actions will cause globally and the destructions that come with extinction. It is nerve-racking to know that extinction is not reversible and if humans continue with their harmful
