The Elizabethan time period is also known as The Renaissance and was named after Queen Elizabeth I. Queen Elizabeth I ruled from November 17, 1558 to March 24, 1603. Country husbands’ jobs were mainly ploughing, sowing, making hay, harvesting, threshing, slaughtering, hunting, hawking, fishing, and archery. Amongst many other jobs, housewives were mainly responsible for all religious duties, as well as nursing and providing for the family. In Elizabethan times, one comes of age at 21 years old. When given permission by a parent, girls can get married as early as 12, boys at 14. Education at this time was different depending on gender. Girls were taught at home, while boys were taught in school. Noble children were taught privately by tutors. The school day normally consisted of waking up at 6 or 7 in the morning, prayers, work, breakfast, work, dinner and then work more until the end of the school day at around 5:30 in the evening. The official state religion of this time period was the Church of England. William Shakespeare was born April 23, 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon. It is believed that he attended grammar school in Stratford, but there are no records of him attending school which raised some controversy. Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway when he was 18 and she was 26. He had three children, Susanna, Hamnet and Judith. He established himself as an actor in London and joined “Lord Chamberlain’s Men,” later known as “The King’s Men,” which consisted of Shakespeare, Will Kempe and Richard Burbage. The group often performed at the Globe theatre, one of the most well-known theatres in London. It was originally built in 1599 before being torn down in 164 and being rebuilt in the 1980’s.
