In “The Diary of Anne Frank” by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett, the conflict of the story is how the Nazis ultimately want to wipe out the Jewish population and have the German population dominate. This makes the Jew’s lives harder because the Nazis are forcing them to do things that make them stand out so that they can be treated differently. One example of this would be “We had to wear yellow stars” (Goodrich-Hackett 703). The Nazis made them wear this patch called The Star of David on all of their clothing so that people would know they were Jewish. The Nazis also prohibited Jews from doing everyday things.
Upon the arrival of the Germans, the Jews of Sighet eventually experience the restrictions placed upon those of Jewish descent. One of the earliest restrictions is the rule set upon the Jews, stating that they all must wear the yellow star. “‘The yellow star? So what? It’s not lethal…’”

Since Gibbons decided to write her book on sensitive topics, she made the characters much like the people in her society. Abuse was kept a secret during the time Gibbons wrote her book, and that was reflected by Ellen not having anyone to talk to about her homelife. “I say I told you I wanted to come stay with you and you said fine. Ellen knows that she is not going to live with her abusive father forever, she believes that she will find a loving family that will take her in and a place to call home. When Ellen goes to Church she notices a foster mother with many children. “I went to church and figured that the woman with all the girls lined up by her had to be the new mama for me and then I looked up and thanked the lord for sending me that dress. I said I look like I am worth something today and she will notice the dress first and then me inside it and say to herself I sure would like to have a girl like her”.

The Frank family and the Van Daan family were completely different, yet the shared adversity brought them together. The movie is quit modest with the way it presented that time with the way they dressed to the way they spoke. It also focused of how art was important, precious and a luxury to attain. It addresses the tough life of people who suffer living problem such as, money, are treated and looked down on.
