Imagine you're in the year 1398, you are painting a picture but it looks all the same as the other ones. You look over at your friends and something makes them stand out. The strokes look different and there is a whole other perspective of the world we thought we knew. During the years 1300-1650 was when the Renaissance took place. Shakespearean clothing fits in the Elizabethan category. The Elizabethan Era is also known as the Golden Age due to the European’s growth in power. Elizabethan Era clothing was very fancy, complex, and colorful. Huge, puffy dresses and frilly collars come to mind when thinking about this era’s style. The people considered fashion very important.
I decided to focus on the Unicorn Tapestries for my Renaissance art project. The Unicorn Tapestries are a series of seven tapestries originally known as The Hunt of the Unicorn, and are tentatively dated between 1495 and 1505 which, according to the book timeline, is during the High Renaissance in Italy and the continuing Renaissance in the rest of Europe. Very little is known about the origin of these tapestries, and they are believed to have originated in the Southern Netherlands in Brussels. They are in phenomenal condition and the colors are still brilliant. Only one of the tapestries is missing a piece—The Mysterious Capture of the Unicorn a.k.a.
The story of Bayeux Tapestry illustrates a political statement. King Edward picked William to be his successor after he died; however, Harold deceived him and took over the Throne of England. In addition, Harold fought William throughout the war in order to succeed after King Edward died. William believed that he should have been the next king of England. For example, the Tapestry shows Harold taking an oath of William, which I assume to be an agreement to support William as the King of England.
They wore extravagant makeup and even though they put harmful things on their face they took very good care of it at the end of the day. Few of the trends they used back then are still around. Hair was their most prized possession. Women and men 's hairstyles were kept simple in comparison to their makeup, way of dressing, and everything else in the Baroque Era.
In Marilyn Nelson Waniek’s poem “The Century Quilt” an abundance of imagery, positive connotation, flashbacks, and a creative structure is used to develop the complex themes and ideas represented in the poem. These devices create a meaningful and concise story of the values each family may have, and the importance to keep these values alive. In order to convey the importance of family value or in this case the quilt. Waniek describes the quilt having “Six Van Dyke brown squares, two white ones, and one square the yellow brown of mama’s cheeks.”

Tailored clothes were also designed with much more aesthetic detail such as pictures being “embroidered by hand” (Source 2. 5) which meant clothes took hours upon hours to finish. These fancy clothes were a symbol of wealth because only the rich could afford to have these clothes custom made for them. Lower or middle class people often had their own family members making clothes for them because they could not afford to have a tailor. Most clothes made by lower to middle class people were only made of “one or two pieces of cloth” (Source 2. 4) in order to conserve cloth for other clothing. As time when on tailoring changed from making fancy designs to making clothes that fit the body well and looked good.
For the most part, finished goods and clothing were made by hand by each respective artisan, or at home. Each gun was made by a weapon smith, one by one, no piece from one machine exactly like the next of the same model. Clothes were tailored in much the same way, each article of clothing unique from the last
“A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots” - Marcus Garvey. The Harlem Renaissance was a period of time in which racial pride and culture were thrust away in favor of a more traditional style of art. However, during this time, racial pride was best expressed through folk art via the means of relatable structure, understandable word choice and everyday subject matter. Common poets of the time chose not to imitate the formal and restrictive style of the European influenced “high art” and instead believed in a more down-to-earth, conversational style of writing. In these choices, poets began to shape a new form of art called “folk art” that gave readers content inspired by daily life
The fabrics were imported from India and manufactured in the north of England which contributed to the expanding British textile trade. (White, M) However, the new fabrics were quickly available for the lower ranks of society and allowed ordinary men and women to copy their superiors. This led to what Lemire describes as democratization of fashion in Fashion’s Favourite. The influence of the new consumerist culture was therefore reflected in the new desire for fashion to appeal aesthetically as opposed to the mere usefulness of clothing.
From the beginning of recorded history, men and women have assigned special meaning and significance to different flowers and plants. The symbolic use of flowers is mentioned in Egyptian inscriptions, Chinese writings, and in Greek and Roman mythology. Subtle and secret messages can be given by choosing flowers carefully. It is believed that the flower language began in Turkey during the seventeenth century. Romantic lovers began using floral exchanges to convey emotional messages using the flower’s meanings.
Arts and crafts are often thought of today as something that only children partake in. They can easily be done with your hands and are small hobbies. To people in the late 19th century, arts and crafts were about connecting to your surroundings rather than just filling the time. The arts and crafts movement began a revolution of people who sought to use their hands rather than big machinery to create something. Through meaningful interactions with their materials, people who partook in these activities gained meaningful insights.
