During the nineteenth century, it was discovered that cells could regenerate other cells. Moving on to the twentieth century it was found that cells could also regenerate blood cells. The first human histocompatibility antigens were found by J. Dausset in the 1950’s. The antigens help identify what is normal to be in the body and what shouldn’t be. During the 1960’s, the study of how tissue can be changed has increased. Stem cells have created a big interest in the past ten years. Some stem cells like bone marrow are limited to what it can do but it has no ethical problems like the embryonic stem cells. ESCs are the most interesting. FSC and ASC are limited. Stem cells are being experimented with the heart muscles. Cardiac insufficiency is when the heart isn’t able to pump how it should. Ten thousand of these are found within years. Heart transplants are the only option right now. The problem with heart transplants are the donors of the heart. New treatments are needed so it can help people with this problem. A new treatment that is possible is Xenotransplantation. Cell therapy also could be a definite fix but it has come consequences with it. Trials with gene and cell therapy haven’t created a definite solution. Harvesting cells or of humans can only be in health centers that are approved by Public Authorities. Right now cardiac grafts in sex mismatch are being observed. Trials have been done involving cardiac muscles and mice. The experiment involved injecting bone marrow from a male mouse. The results showed that the stem cells repaired the tissue. The cytokines released could be how the tissue repaired itself. The first human trial was in 2007 using stem cells for heart disease.
