Fences represent emotional and physical conflict in the play Fences particularly between people of different generations or upbringing. Fences by nature separate people or keep people out. Troy, the protagonist of the story is the topic of most if not all of these fences, either the creator of them or on one side or the other. Some people come to the conclusion that Troy is a villain, but this is not the case he is an honorable man, with some attributes that make him seem abusive. Troy has built psychological and physical fences from the opposed threat that he perceives in society. Troy perpetuates the notion that African Americans can’t depend on security through sports particularly towards Cory. As a result Cory and his dad separate ways when he and his dad don’t see eye to eye on sports. Troy builds these fences around his …show more content…

Rose is a strong woman, a woman that Troy should have been proud of, yet Troy throws it all down the drain when he cheats on Rose and has a child with Alberta. In many ways the death of Alberta helped hold Rose and Troy together by forcing both of them to get along to help Raynell have a nurturing childhood. They succeed in doing this because of the self resiliency of them and the ability for Rose to put her regrets behind her so Raynell can have a nurturing childhood. In contrast, Cory wants to get as far away from his dad as he can shown in this quote, “The whole time I was growing up … Papa was like a shadow that followed you everywhere. It weighed on you and sunk into your flesh.” Cory however was also incredibly mature about it because he isn’t holding it against his mom, Rose. Bono is a friend and coworker of Troy and this means that his is in the unusual position of being one of Troy’s peers and equals. Bono chooses to be a slightly moderating force and tries at least a little bit to keep Troy from
