In the play Fences, August Wilson talks about a family whose life has been based around a fence. The play is about an African American family who has struggled. Troy is used to always work for the white man. He gave up his dreams which led to a significant downfall. Therefore, Troy’s son Cory regards to play college football.

Why do people have fences? According to research, “ In every culture, human beings have elected fences, real or imagined…” (1.2) Basically, Troy wants a fence to keep people out. Troy did not display true commitment to marriage. Troy’s wife Rose, also wanted a fence built because she felt that it would keep her loved ones together. It was truly a rough time for Troy’s family. Troy has been fenced all his life without a father figure. Troy has been through abuse and neglection. Troy’s father was also known for raping a woman. His father stayed with him about everything. One day Troy thought that his father was mad because he didn't do his homework. “ Now I thought he was mad cause I ain’t done my work.” It seemed as if anything that Troy had done was going to satisfy his father. …show more content…

Rose is basically an unhappy housewife who is still committed to her marriage. “Okay, Troy… I’ll take care of your baby for you… this child got a mother. But you a womanless man.” (Whitehead) No matter how much Rose has been through with Troy she has always been right by his side. “ Rose loves her family and wants to keep them safe and close to her.”(2.1) Love is such a powerful
