The Power of Emotion The world revolves around human emotions. These emotions drive decisions, actions, and thoughts, which are the fuel needed to achieve basic human interaction. While these emotions are imperative for relationships, they are not all beneficial. Negative emotions can bleed out profusely, staining every aspect of life they are able to reach. More specifically, these complex emotions possess the ability to shape relationships. Without the strength of these important relationships, humans lack support as well as the feeling of being loved. A common way of losing friends evolves from changing for the worse, and not being the same person from the beginning of the relationship. Since greed possesses the force to cause this change, it is directly responsible for the relationships it ruins. A more indirect approach to losing loved ones due to negative emotions stems from the formation of depression, as "greed comes with stress, exhaustion, anxiety, [and] depression. [and] can lead to maladaptive behavior patterns" (Manfred). Not only does no one want to be around someone partaking in these cruel acts, but in addition, the personal impact of depression can cause one to push away surrounding relationships. When someone is diagnosed with depression it is difficult to be in a relationship as they can not provide what is needed for it to remain healthy ("Depression and Relationships"). While greed, depression, and relationship strength may seem completely unrelated, it is important to notice what connects them since a domino effect occurs. The last emotion that will be mentioned is shame. Shame can occur for a variety of reasons, and can also affect many aspects of life, including relationships. In The Kite Runner, Amir feels ashamed as he is embarrassed that Haasan is Hazara. He avoids him in front of people and does not stand up for him, which in the end, is what ruins their relationship. Humans feel like they are “in the spotlight when those embarrassing moments happen” (Why Our Partners Embarrass Us). This is true even if the embarrassment is happening to someone else. Feeling shameful of someone can cause one to back away, ultimately weakening the relationship. A few examples of this in action include someone “[leaving] the room during an awkward scene on TV, [apologizing] for another person’s mishap, or [looking] down at their phone during an uncomfortable conversation" (Gillis). This unshakable feeling can turn a whole relationship upside down. A person who was once such a key part of one's life can instantly be viewed in a completely different way.
