As a freshman at Roger Williams University in Bristol, RI, I took the writing class WTNG 102 Section 31, taught by Professor Ramey. All undergraduate students must receive a final grade of at least a 70% in the class prior to being enrolled in Critical Writing (WTNG 200 or 220). Entering college, I was most worried about taking Expository Writing because writing has never been one of my strengths. I have always struggled with writing transitions and have made endless grammatical mistakes, including comma splices and tense changes. The paper’s main outcomes listed in the syllabus were to learn and interpret rhetorical purpose, typical content, structural features, and linguistic features; all of which are characteristics of genres. My genre assignment, “Genre Analysis”, was a detailed analysis on an article about smartphone technology and its effect on mental health. To show my understanding of the characteristics of genres, I used specific examples from the article to help back up my main points. First, I showed my knowledge of rhetorical purpose by stating that, “the readers of this article will spend approximately a half an hour reading this document due to its complexity. The complexity of the article causes the reader to analyze the text, look up terms and think critically” (Genre Analysis). This shows that I understood the rhetorical purpose because I considered the audience and the article’s main purpose. My understanding of the content material is shown in the statement: “the article uses American Psychology Association (APA) citation to cite statistics and information used throughout the article. Most psychological journals and publications require articles to be cited in APA form, as that is the standard citation format” (Genre Analysis). Furthermore, I showed that I understood the learning outcome of structural features by writing in my essay that “the main topics, which are the headings, are broken into sub-sections.” (Genre Analysis). I included this information in my genre analysis essay because it shows how the article is formatted which is directly correlated to its structural features. I demonstrated my competence of linguistic features by “Specialized language is used throughout the article, such as mhealth and EMA. These specialized terms are defined directly after they are first introduced to the reader” (Genre Analysis). If I were to edit this paper in the future, I would include more specific examples;
