I chose to meet with my English 101 professor, Holly Hayes. I chose to meet with Dr. Hayes because I thoroughly enjoy her class and enjoy speaking with her. She is approachable, friendly, highly educated on her subject. During our discussion we conversed about my upcoming assignment in her class which involves choosing a research topic to study and investigate, with the ultimate goal of writing a Social Science Literature Review, followed by an Autoethnography relating to the topic of our literature review. We began the discussion by talking about my topic of choice, “The effects of being educated in a public versus public school.” We talked about how I might research the topic and what points of discussion I might bring into the discussion; in what ways I could compare the outcomes of students from both education backgrounds. These possible comparisons included mean salary, poverty rate, mental health, job placement, and family status. Hayes’ ideas and beliefs surrounding some of the current problems in the public and private education sectors respectively. This included problems with the common core teaching system and its removal of the ability for teachers to be unique in their teaching styles. As well, we discussed the passive lack of diversity in private schools and possible causes and methods to solve this problem. During the conversation, we discussed the logic behind the organization of the English 101 classes at NCSU. Due to the overall low prevalence of English majors at NCSU the English department chose to structure the English 101 program in such a way that it covered the methods by which one writes a scientific and literary paper.
