ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING METHODS
The history of Language teaching in India, as we know, has a long tradition. Memorization of vocabulary and translation of sentences often formed the major part of such learning process in the past. Ancient languages such as Sanskrit and Pali were mastered in India through the process of memorization of texts and vocabulary lists. But this tradition of language teaching has been subjected to a tremendous change, especially, throughout the 20th century.  Drills are exercises in translating disconnected sentences from the target language into the mother tongue, and vice versa.
1.7.2 DIRECT METHOD
This approach was developed primarily as a retort to the grammar-translation approach in an endeavor to incorporate supplementary use of the target language in teaching. Second language learning is similar to first language learning in this method. In this method, the emphasis will be on oral interaction, spontaneous use of language, no translation, little if any analysis of grammatical rules and structures. Communication skills will be organized around question-answer exchanges between teachers and students.

 Instruction is in the target language.
 Inductive approach to grammar.
 Only vocabulary is taught every day.
 Concrete vocabulary through pictures and objects is taught.
 Abstract vocabulary with the association of ideas is taught.
 New teaching points are introduced orally.
 Speech and listening comprehension are taught.
 Correct pronunciation and grammar are emphasised.
 Advanced students read literature for comprehension and pleasure.
