The other cause of the war was centuries of mistreatment at the hands of monarchies and the church brought average citizens in Europe to a breaking point. This made people speak out against the church and the whole idea of religion this made everyone question everything then came the idea of the Enlightenment. The first major Enlightenment figure in England was Thomas Hobbes, who caused great controversy with the release of his provocative book Leviathan (1651). This book took a social perspective on the nature of the human. Then about half a century later john locke came in with his ideas in government. Locke's views on government was that “ability of every man to virtuously govern himself according to God’s law.” That is the first Treatises.
