Enrique Iglesias: Video Analysis

Narrative is the structure of events within a specific media text. A linear narrative follows a chronological order whereas a nonlinear narrative doesn’t and often appears deconstructed and disjointed. “A story should have a beginning, middle and end, but not necessarily in that order” . Throughout this essay I will explore how narrative structures are constructed and presented within three different contrasting music videos. The videos which I will be closely analysing are as follows: ‘Enrique Iglesias – Hero’, this shows the unfolding and captivating story of two lovers on a road trip, enemies of Enrique capture his girlfriend and he attempts to save her but to no avail as after a brutal assault he dies in his girlfriend's arms; primarily

In the stage of the Equilibrium, connotations show that everything is fine. The camera uses close up shots of Enrique and his lover, Jennifer Hewitt, the sunny and peaceful looking setting also portrays this. Although, this rapidly changes during the disruption stage, as the lovers’ car breaks down and they are attacked and become trapped by a group of men. There is a strong use of demographics as the lighting appears drastically darker, reflecting the situation and the camera shows shots of the lower halves of the hero’s bodies, instead of their faces. This makes the audience feel less emotionally connected with them. A necklace is shown through the use of a close-up which provokes thought and symbolises its importance. The villains are now shown wearing black which portrays a negative connotation. The quest/conflict stage is shown with the use of shot reverse shot and more close ups of the heroes and villains, as the audience become aware of the conversation taking place and Enrique’s discovery. Afterwards, the resolution is shown as Enrique tries to fight back against them, the camera zooms in to Enrique’s face when he sees Jennifer’s reaction. The fact that the heroes are dressed in white also suggests their purity and displays a positive connotation of them. Finally, the restoration of the equilibrium is shown and signified through the dark surroundings. The weather

The helper would be the mother who guides the hero in the process of healing the girl due to the bad experience she had with her mother’s boyfriend. The girl herself would be identified as the princess, and the boyfriend who leads her astray would be shown as the false hero. Propp’s identified father figure would be the girl’s father in jail but also the mother’s new husband, who treats her appropriately.

Both Chase and Status’ and Lil Wayne’s videos are both mainly narrative based although they include some aspect of performance as both feature the singers, Lil Wayne and Delilah within the music videos. This may be to build a relationship with the audience and also show off their star identity, therefore creating a brand and making themselves well known within the
