An article written in the Journal of Correctional Education labeled “Enrolling in College While in Prison: Factors That Promote Male and Female Prisoners to Participate,” Kristin Rose and Chris Rose attempt to persuade male and female prisoners that college education in prison is very helpful when leaving jail and can aide with getting a job. They argue that college education in prison is not being taken advantage of and there are many factors between both male and female that determines who will and will not take advantage of the education provided. An example from the text would be, “Tewskbury and Stengel (2006) look specifically at the individual motivations mentioned by Rose (2004). Tewskbury and Stengel found that nearly 50% of those prisoners participating in college-level programming did so in order to feel better about their chances and to improve their self-esteem.” This shows that the analysis varified that half of the people taking part in the educational programs are trying to better themselves. This shows that higher education in prisons are important. Rose and Rose provided evidence from their “Logistic Regression Analysis”. The “Logistic Regression Analysis” is described in the text as, “In total, five logistic regression models were produced. In the first model, the prisoners' sex was used to predict the probability of prisoner participation in college-level programming. In the second model, the static demographic variables (age, sex, and race) were included to predict the probability of program participation. Model 3 added highest grade attended, income, inmate status, child visits, and time served, to the static demographic variables used in the previous model. Models 4 and 5 included the predictor variables of age, race, child visits, inmate status, highest grade attended, income, time …show more content…

In The Little Seagull Handbook by Bullock, Brody and Weinberg, logos is included in the text when it states, “By itself, a position does not make an argument; the argument comes when a writer offers reasons to support the position” (43). Rose and Rose provide reasonings as to why it is important for prisoners to take advantage of the educational programs provided. An example for the text would be, “Leaving prison with a college education, or even experience in college classes, can help prisoners find employment, avoid recidivating, and “make if on the outside.” This shows that taking advantage of the free education provided can make finding a job easier in the long run. Rose and Rose provide reasons as to why women do not take advantage of the programs like the men do. One reason from the text would be, “ women may be less likely to participate in educational programs as well as other programs in the facility as a result of these anxieties surrounding their children.” Men do not have this problem because there are more prisons for males than females and so the females are placed further from their familys than the males typically are. This creates and anxiety for the women due to lack of visitaion from their familys which discourages them to take place in the educational
