The work “The entombment of Christ” clearly demonstrates mannerist characteristics. The format is vertical and the theme is the entombment of christ. First of all, the image does not fit in the frame of the painting; for example, the guy to the right is cropped out from the frame. It seems as if he did not fit in the frame. The figures look as if they are going to spill out. That is, the composition of the painting violates the frame. One very important mannerist characteristic is the technique of changing colors used by Pontormo. Looking at Christ, it can be seen that his head is very small, his torso is very big and his legs are too short. As for the poses, they are exaggerated and unreal. For example, one of the characters is holding Jesus while standing on his toes. This is exaggerated because he is holding a heavy weight and is only leaning on his toes. Also, it is hard to identify where the figures are standing on; they are cut off and cropped. Moreover, it is hard to tell whose hands are holding Jesus from the back. We can’t tell whose hand is holding the left arm of Jesus, for example. The characters in the back also look as if they are standing on a ground higher than the one on which virgin Mary is standing on. We can’t tell how they are standing that high behind them. It is also worth mentioning that this painting is very hard to decipher. You can’t really tell who the characters are. The only identifiable ones are Jesus Christ and Virgin Mary. The others cannot really be identified. The theme of the painting is also hard to tell. We don’t know if the characters are taking Jesus down from the cross or preparing to entomb him.
