Beowulf is the epic tale of its main character. Beowulf travels to Denmark to help the Danish people fight off a nasty monster who has been terrorizing them, Grendel. Beowulf slays Grendel and Grendel’s mother and returns home, becoming king and living a long life. Towards the end of his life, a horrible dragon begins plaguing his homeland. He slays the dragon and soon after, dies himself. The Book: Hrothgar, king of the Danes, is having trouble with the attacks of a monster named Grendel. Many nights when the Danes are partying loudly, Grendel attacks King Hrothgar’s mead hall, Heorot, killing and sometimes eating the Danes. He has a great mead hall built so his warriors can gather to drink, receive gifts, and sing legendary stories; he names it Heorot. The loud cheering and celebrating angers Grendel, a scary demon with whom Hrothgar shares his kingdom. Hrothgar is also hiding the fact that Grendel is his son. Grendel terrorizes the Danes for many nights, killing Danish warriors and civilians. One day, a great warrior named Beowulf shows up claiming he will slay their monster. Hrothgar accepts his offer and throws a feast in honor of Beowulf. This angers Grendel and later on into the night he finally attacks. Beowulf fights the demon bare handed and naked. They battle for a while and eventually Grendel tries to escape. As he struggles to escape, Beowulf gets Grendel’s arm caught between a door and slams it on the demon’s arm until finally it is severed from his body. Grendel runs back to his mother’s lair where he eventually dies. As a trophy of his battle with Grendel and proof he has killed him, he hangs Grendel’s now severed arm from the ceiling of Heorot. The celebration goes on all through the night. In reaction of her son’s death, Grendel’s mother goes to Heorot in the middle of the night and kills almost everyone in it. Leaving Beowulf, Wiglaf, King Hrothgar, and the queen to wake up to the horrific scene of everyone dead, hanging from the ceiling. The first one the was noticeable is the fact that in the book, Grendel attacks after everyone has gone to sleep but in the movie everyone is still awake and partying. Another very surprising difference which was noticed until about halfway through the movie and at the end is that Hrothgar is Grendel’s father and Beowulf is the dragon’s father. Beowulf killed Grendel’s mother in the book and the dragon was a totally separate monster but in the movie the dragon is Beowulf’s son because in the movie Beowulf never killed Grendel’s mother but instead gave her a new child; the dragon. The final difference that was most noticeable was the fact that Beowulf and Wiglaf never return to their homeland but rather stay in Denmark for the rest of their
