Grendel had being killing and terrorizing Hrothgar’s people. The news of Grendel had travel to the land of the Geats and Beowulf had come to provide assistance to Hrothgar. One day after Beowulf and Grendel’s fight, where Beowulf tears off the demons’ arm, the monster’s mother came to vengeance her son’s death. She was also defeated and killed by Beowulf, for which he received many gifts and praise by Hrothgar and his wife Wealhtheow.
Beowulf took on both Grendel and his mother with the intentions of saving the Danes, whether he survived or
Grendel is disturbed by the Danes enjoyment of life and happiness; for revenge he ruins their enjoyment and happiness. Grendel is a descendant of Cain, “he was spawned in that slime, conceived…monster” who was a “ murderous creature banished by God”(19-22). He finds harassing and killing innocent people entertaining. Beowulf comes and vanishes Grendel and stops him from continuing his evil acts. On the other hand, Beowulf and the Danes assume “Grendel`s elimination” is the last monster they will encounter, but “believing that [the] evil has been eradicated” the unexpected happens, “Grendel’s mother appear[s]”(Kardaun 1).
In the epic poem Beowulf, the protagonist, Beowulf, faces three “monsters” at different times in his life. The poem begins with Grendel, a monster who attacks only in the dark of night, tormenting the kingdom of Hrothgar. The last two sections of the epic detail the conquering by Beowulf of Grendel’s mother and the dragon. The battle between the monsters and Beowulf represent the theme of good versus evil in the poem, as well as the fusion of pagan and Christian ideals in the changing Germanic society. Grendel’s mother’s actions directly juxtapose the role of a woman in this time period, and the greediness of the dragon with his treasure contrasts with the virtues of what would be considered a good king.
Beowulf and Archilles are two kings. Beowulf, I find, is a good ruler, unlike Archilles. They both like doing something heroic alone just to get the fame for it, but they’re both really different from each other. I believe Beowulf is a better fit for modern times.
Many problems and questions found in Beowulf can relate to modern times. The punishments aren't as brutal. We don't have dragons in today's time. Beowulf showcases good versus evil, which we still see everyday. There are many differences, but at the same time there are many similarities.
The monster in Beowulf, known as Grendel, is a representation of human fear, hatred, and impulse. On page 44, the narrator states, " He found them sprawled in sleep, suspecting nothing, their dreams undisturbed... He slipped through the door and there in the silence snatched up thirty men, smashed them..." Because the Anglo Saxons mainly lived on the coast of England, they feared that vikings or some other enemy will come attack them in the middle of the night. Grendel, this excerpt is a reflection of that fear, where Grendel is the enemy.
As he killed those men he is “delighted with his night’s slaughter”(40-41). Grendel, had killed Danish people to fulfill a blood lust and a deep hatred because in his situation he was alone. However, Beowulf had to lead his geats to fight with Grendel in cruel way, they were ready to take blood for blood. Grendel’s first action had lead the poem to the most important part of the story which is the
When Grendel came to Hrothgar’s Kingdom, he brings a major change in life for Hrothgar and his people. Before Grendel came, Hrothgar’s men were joyous and merry. However, “…sorrow heaped at [Hrothgar’s] door by [Grendel’s] hell-forged hands” (63-64). When Grendel accomplishes his first murder, the entire kingdom falls into a deep misery.
He risks his life against the dragon to save his people and get back the treasure. Although he dies before leaving an heir, he is known as the greatest king on earth: “They said that of all the kings upon earth/ he was the man most gracious and fair-minded,/ kindest to his people and keenest to win fame. ”(106. 3180-3182). Beowulf was an incredible king because he was strong, generous, brave, and kind to his people.
Grendel spread havoc for twelve years. Beowulf hears about Grendel and decides to battle him. Everyone
King Hrothgar felt hopeless and didn’t know how he can take Grendal down. He was a monster who couldn’t be stopped. King Hygelac’s thane, Beowulf, the great hero decided to
Being an epic hero, Beowulf was very brave and battled many immortal creatures. One monster he came across was Grendel. “Conceived by a pair of the monster born of Cain, murderous creatures banned by God..,”(44), Hrothgar’s men would say. This is a reference from the Bible, showing the evil portrayed in the monster Grendel. This monster went to Herot and killed thirty men just because he was hungry.
Beowulf risked his life multiple times by battling Grendel and Grendel’s mother to save the people of Denmark. He also embarks on a battle with a dragon as an old man ascending on the Geats Throne. Each battle Beowulf fought has all been for the safety of his people. Although the Knight did not battle as a deed for his people, he also is viewed as a humble person his battles were for a purpose greater than himself. The knight never talks about his brave and valorous deeds.
In the story, Beowulf, translated by Burton Raffel a warrior, Beowulf, from the Geats comes to the rescue of Hrothgar, the king of the Danes whose land is being attacked by a monster, Grendel. Beowulf succeeds and defeats Grendel, however, Beowulf battle is not finished, because Grendel 's mother now wants to get revenge for her son. Beowulf kills Grendel’s mother, and after this victory, Beowulf returns home to the Geats. Fifty years pass and Beowulf becomes the king of the Geats, but there is one final battle for the brave hero. There is a dragon that plagues his people because of stolen treasure, now Beowulf has to defend his people.
