For as long as he could remember Pea loved to sing. He sang about the sun and the butterflies while he was in the pod. He sang about the garden and the tall grey castle while he was in the basket on the way to the kitchen. He sang about the busy cook and the hot oven while he was in the jar on the top kitchen shelf. In fact, he sang about anything that came into his pea sized brain.
“You’re too loud!” the other peas complained.
“Off-key” said another.
“PEAS kill me” joked another. But Pea did not care.
One dark and stormy night, Pea, who was afraid of storms, was trying to sing himself to sleep when suddenly the kitchen door flung open, it was the queen. She came into the pantry, grabbed the jar of peas, ripped off the lid and plucked Pea from inside. She took him to a room and Pea found himself staring at layers of soft feathery mattresses.

Pea heard the door open and a soft voice say “Thank you for your kindness your majesty. I shall tell my father about this great deed you have done for me.”
The queen replied, “Good night my dear.” and Pea heard the door shut once more. There was a long silence and just as Pea was about to doze off, he heard a sound. At first it sounded like leaves rustling, then the noise grew a bit louder until finally it became uncontrollable sobbing. It was such a sad sound full of sadness, regret and bitterness and it went on and on until Pea couldn’t stand it anymore and, so he started to sing. He sang about the sun and the butterflies, the garden and the tall grey castle. He sang about the cook and his kitchen and when he finally stopped, the crying had stopped as well.
