Epiphany by definition according to Merriam-webster is “a usually sudden manifestation or perception of the essential nature or meaning of something; an intuitive grasp of reality through something (such as an event) usually simple and striking”. Epiphanies can sometimes be spiritual, sometimes not, but they help the individual understand something to their core. Boyd K Packer said, “True doctrine, understood, changes attitudes and behavior, ” (1). When something is truly understood, an epiphany, we are fundamentally changed. In the novel Jesus ' Son, the main character Fuckhead has several moments of understanding about his life and the world around him. However, he does not experience the key component to true understanding, which is the reaction. Jesus ' Son challenges the legitimacy of epiphanies. Fuckhead’s relationship with Michelle was riddled with mistakes. Fuckhead had a long history of abusing Michelle both physically and verbally, and Michelle had her share of outbursts. He recalls “Once, as we stood arguing at a street corner, I punched her in the stomach, She doubled over an broke down crying… They put her in the car with them and drove away. But she came back.” (45). He was admittedly abusive to women. Later, he reflects about his relationship, in particular, his twenty-fourth birthday when she shot at him five times but missed on purpose. He said, "She wanted to hurt me as only a child can be hurt by its mother,” (84). Fuckhead understood the mutually-destructive nature of his relationship with Michelle and never sought to alter or end the relationship. Fuckhead never made any changes to the way he treated women regardless of any realizations.
