Ergot poisoning is caused by a fungus called Claaviceps purpurea. This fungus effects rye and wheat. When the fungus first infects the plant the head of the grain will have a honey-dew like residue on it, which contains fungal spores that allows the disease to spread easily. When the fungus enters a growing kernel of grain it turns it to a dark purple color, this is called sclerotia. Seclerotia is commonly mistaken for larger discolored grains of wheat. Within the infected grains are chemical’s in which LSD is composed of. These chemicals can affect the nervous system and movant of muscles. Eating food that has been contaminated with Ergot can cause many symptoms such as muscle spasms, convulsing, and hallucination’s. Symptoms which are similar
