What is “Columbine”? “Columbine” often refers to the 1999 Columbine High School shooting in Columbine, Colorado. The shooting happened on April 20, 1999. The shooting had two shooters, Eric Harris, and Dylan Klebold. They ended up killing 15 people, including themselves and injured 24. The Columbine school shooting was supposed to be a bombing but the bombs did not go off so the shooters started shooting the students and staff instead. Many conspiracy theories surrounding the shooting arose. Harris was seen as a brutal mastermind while Dylan was seen as a depressed hot-headed. Harris was able to befriend and manipulate Klebold into helping him pull off a psychotic plan. Klebold was quite a gullible person in the first place. Mixing that with Eric’s manipulative tendencies, creates a dangerous “dyad” as some may say. Harris used multiple different ways to manipulate Klebold. Dylan would often question Harris’ plan but Eric would often reassure Dylan that the plan was bulletproof. Once Klebold questioned Harris about the bombing. He was worried about the police interfering during the shooting and he kind of wanted to back out. Eric reassured him by creating distraction bombs to make sure the police are not near the school. Klebold showed that he was not a large fan of bombing the school. He gave a friend Eric’s journal where he talked about the bombing. It was a sign that he did not feel safe stopping him himself so he tried to get someone else to stop him. Harris never truly wanted a friend, he wanted a person he could manipulate into helping him. Harris “befriended” a half-Jewish boy while he is a known Nazi and antisemitic. If he truly wanted a friend, he would not have befriended someone who was a part of a group he hated but Harris viewed Klebold as someone who was willing to listen to him and was easy to manipulate. Eric was referred to a psychiatrist after the stealing incident, which to him meant he had another person to manipulate. Harris would often make it seem he was trying to get better and was trying to change but he never was. What he told his psychiatrist often contradicted what he said in his journal. He would put in a facade that he truly wanted to get help but his journals painted a different story. In his journal, where he wrote his true thoughts, he expressed that the psychiatrist and others were not trying to help him but instead were trying to turn him into a mindless zombie. Harris viewed his way of thinking as the correct way of viewing the world and everyone else was wrong. He viewed them as mindless zombies and drones. He viewed himself as superior and God compared to them. It is not uncommon for psychopaths to manipulate people like mental health professionals (Cullen 275). Harris purposefully lied to his psychiatrist to get them off his back but he did it mostly because he could. Harris enjoyed lying to people and having people believe him. It made him feel like a God. Harris was highly manipulative but some say
